Compass Lake in the Hills FL
Compass Lake in the Hills, FL. Ah-h-h-h, the mental picture of a quiet lake nestled in the natural beauty of gently rolling hills! That’s just what you find here. Compass Lake in the Hills, FL is a 10,000-acre master-planned community that has larger homesites, and is a deed-restricted, equestrian community of astounding beauty in northwest Florida. It is located 40 miles north of Panama City, in Jackson County, just outside of Alford, FL, off Highway 231.
At the turn of the 20th century, Compass Lake was a small community with several stores, a single hotel, one school, a train depot, and a post office. Tung oil and Satsuma orange groves provided the strength of the economy. By 1950, the town had fallen to the wayside with the loss of the Satsuma groves to a freeze, and the competition of Tung Oil production from Argentina.
However, vacationers to the Panhandle of Florida found that Compass Lake was an excellent place to get away, and they began establishing their vacation homes in the area. Thus, luxurious homes, water sports, and fishing began to make an impact on the area, and nearby Panama City offered excellent shopping and dining opportunities.
